Weeton Primary School: Providing effective learning opportunities for all pupils.

Helping children to become readers for pleasure

We are planning to revamp our school library this year.  We would like the children of Weeton School to become not only good readers, but also children who read for pleasure.

If you would like to develop your child's reading and give them a love of books, you may like to visit the website of Reading Is Fundamental, UK.

RIF is an initiative of the National Literacy Trust that helps children and young people (aged 0 to 19) to realise their potential by motivating them to read.

They promote the fun of reading, the importance of book choice and the benefits to families of having books at home.

Research shows that parents who support their child's reading make a big difference to how well their children do at school.  Children who read for pleasure achieve more highly at school.

The RIF website provides lots of advice and tips for parents, including:

 * tips on how to choose books for your child;

 * tips on sharing books with your child;

 * downloadable sheets on helping children to read;

 * links to children's books and reading;

 * competitions and book reviews.
